A precis is a short written or spoken account of something, which gives important points but not details. It is a short summary of a passage.

 
Rules of Precis Writing:
  • First, read the test twice or thrice carefully to summarise.
  • Underline and mark important ideas.
  • with the help of underlined ideas, draw the outline of your precis.
  • Omit all unnecessary information.
  • Don't omit the important points. Keep the fact in your mind that the length of the precis should be one-third (1/3) of the original text.
  • It should be written in indirect speech.
  • It should be written in the third person and in the past tense. in the case of universal truth, the present tense should be used.
  • It should be written in your own words.
Things not to be used while writing a precis.
  • Examples in the passage.
  • Stories.
  • Proverbs. 
  • Quotations.
  • Idioms.
  • Repetition of similar sentences or ideas.
  • long phrases.
  • complex sentences having long clauses.
  • Direct speech.
